The Karen people are an ethnic group from Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand. Due to decades of civil war, many Karen fled to refugee camps in Thailand before being resettled in countries like the United States. Today, over 1,000 Karen individuals call Oregon home, particularly in the Portland Metro area.
Since resettling, our community has faced many challenges — language barriers, lack of access to resources, and difficulties navigating American systems. OKA was created to help address these challenges with culturally specific support.
The Oregon Karen Association (OKA) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded on June 18, 2021. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Karen people in Oregon by preserving our culture, expanding access to essential resources, and strengthening community resilience.
